Course description
The isoinertial traing has been originally designed to prevent astronauts physical deconditioning in microgravity conditions, it spread out in the sports world for strength and power muscle development. However, this training method is emerging in the physical therapy and rehabilitation field.
The isoinertial training allows to work both in the concentric phase (muscle shortening) and in the eccentric phase (muscle lengthening) and it requires more motor coordination than other training methods. In the Isoinertial training the resistance is proportional to the strength generated by the patient/athlete, so the more strength applied during the concentric phase, the more energy will be returned in the eccentric phase. This eccentric overload, if dosed and implemented correctly in the work plan, allows to obtain better functional and structural benefits, if compared to other traditional muscle conditioning methods. Thanks to the extreme versatility of the isoinertial loading machines, it is possible to apply this method in different intervention areas, such as: injuries prevention and muscle-tendon overuse injuries, post-traumatic and post-surgical functional recovery, rehabilitation and early conditioning for return to sport after ligament injuries, etc.
This course will be taught in a single day, it allows the participant to comprehend and apply the theoretical fundamentals of this physical reconditioning method on the field, the isoinertial training will be useful in the prevention and rehabilitation programs. After the first theoretical session, you will be able to try personally different isoinertial training machines in different rehabilitation interventions, depending on different musculoskeletal pathologies or functional deficits.
The course is specifically aimed at healthcare professionals who want to know and enhance an innovative working method based on scientific evidences. The isoinertial training is applicable with preventive or rehabilitative purposes, to different types of patients, from the professional athlete to the elderly with chronic diseases. Therefore, the course will allow participants to interact and discuss with instructors who have a direct and specific experience in using the isoinertial method in their daily practice.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Understand the scientific basis of the isoinertial method
- Know the physiological and functional benefits, as well as the limits of this innovative method
- Understand the short- and long-term outcomes of the isoinertial training
- Perform and have safely carried out some exercises on a device that requires an eccentric loading phase
- Know the main applications of the isoinertial training in relation to the main pathologies that involve the muscles, tendons and ligaments
- Understand the key principles to follow for the administration of the correct workloads along all the rehabilitation steps
- Understand how to plan and individualize the isoinertial training in physiotherapy
- Know how to apply isoinertial method to prevent injuries not only in sports
Teaching Methods
The course is structured with a first theoretical introduction session after which there will be some practical sessions and workgroups.
Informed consent
The choice to try the exercises proposed in the practical sessions is completely up to the participants. However, since these activities includes physical fatigue (within the limits of individual abilities), all participants will be required to complete the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q), and to sign the informed consent.
The course attendance provides the opportunity to acquire Crediti Formativi Universitari (CFU) (the participant has to verify this possibility with his/her own university)
La frequenza al corso prevede la possibilità di acquisire Crediti Formativi Universitari (CFU) (previa verifica a carico del singolo partecipante con la propria istituzione universitaria)
