Course description

The two-day "ACL rehabilitation & Return To Sport" course consists of a combination of theoretical and practical sessions aimed at enabling participants to use an evidence-based approach for the evaluation and treatment following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury of the knee.

At the end of the course participants will be able to identify and translate into clinical practice the best evidence emerging from scientific research and plan an evidence-based rehabilitation program for the anterior cruciate ligament.

Furthermore, the implementation of tests for returning to the field, the psychological management of the athlete and the ability to manage a decision-making process within a multidisciplinary team are aspects of main importance for the therapeutic success.

Course learning objectives

At the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • Manage the pre-operative phase: strengthening and education as main therapeutic goals
  • Plan, implement and measure an evidence-based rehabilitation program for the anterior cruciate ligament
  • Apply the Return To Sport "continuum" for planning the rehabilitation of anterior cruciate ligament injuries
  • Build a progressive load exercise program by constantly monitoring the athlete's qualitative and quantitative physical capacity
  • Methods to constantly evaluate the athlete during different rehabilitation phases
  • Apply a high qualitative clinical reasoning to sport-specific assessment for return to sport following an anterior cruciate ligament injury (use of Apps and tools useful for the goals)
  • Implement strategies to psychologically support the athlete-patient during the rehabilitation
  • Assess the psychological readiness to return to sport after an anterior cruciate ligament injury
  • Contribute to the decision-making process for the return to sport in a shared and multidisciplinary context
  • Plan, implement and estimate a prevention program for injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament
